What can Britannic teach us about her sister ship, Titanic?
Through negotiations between the owner of Britannic’s wreck and the Greek government, which controls it, divers have finally been allowed to enter the well-preserved hulk.
In the first video, Sam from Historic Travels does a great job of explaining how Britannic was de-designated as a war grave and how its current owner obtained permission to have divers document the interior. The story is fantastic and well worth a listen. The second video offers a much deeper look inside Titanic’s sister.
The two ships were nearly identical before the Titanic became a single-use submersible, and the Britannic was turned into a hospital ship. Looking inside the relatively well-preserved wreck of Britannic tells us a lot about Titanic that her rotting shell can not. As the Britannic sank in water less deep than she was long, and the Titanic was destroyed during the long plunge of her sinking, searching the Britannic’s wreck reveals a lot of detail that all the Titanic expeditions have been unable to.
