The thing I’ve noticed is that every Republican POTUS in my lifetime has been worse than the previous one.
You could say that Ford wasn’t that bad, but it was his pardon of Nixon that made the likes of Lord Dampnut inevitable.
Besides, he wasn’t elected.
Reagan was a nightmare; and there is little difference between the Bushes and Lord Dampnut, except for gentility and actual intelligence… they both have plenty of blood on their hands, and there was no shortage of corruption during their terms.
Well, I just use my passport, which counts as a “real” ID. I get that fewer people have a passport than have a driver’s license, but so far it does work.
In Massachusetts a Real ID Driver's license cost $50, a commercial Real ID Driver's license cost $75, and a plain State Real ID costs $25.
It gets much worse with passports. A passport book by itself costs $130, a passport card/book combo so you don't always have to carry around the bulky passport is $130.
For me a passport is a big chunk of my weekly paycheck.
Passports, on the other hand, are valid for 10 years. I had mine renewed during the pandemic of 2020, and hope by 2030 the consulates will still be running.
And yeah, when the Real ID first came out, it seemed like a way to finally clear up the mess of rules governing ID from state to state. And all the database problems that the Real ID has, I would be very surprised if they didn't apply to passport books and cards as well.
In the meantime, as a new German citizen I have my German ID, as Germany has always stated that the driver's license is not a valid ID since historically it never expired, unlike in the States.
Thank goodness my state passed a requirement that I must share my very secure ID with any naughty (but totally on the up-and-up) pr0n site I might visit. So safe.
Not that it's not a little dystopian, but let's not act like it is some kind of NEW thing. The law is 20 years old, and many states already require most of this for issuing a DL. At least this one is actually a law, and not an Executive Order.

Exactly. And they have been advertising/warning about this at airports for several years now, so anyone acting surprised is...acting.
