Uplift being tracked at Yellowstone’s caldera
Stay calm, the ground has risen an inch across a 20-mile area around the northern edge of Yellowstone’s caldera since last July.
This isn’t the precursor to a massive cinematic moment. Yellowstone hasn’t erupted for 70,000 years, and it seems unlikely to pop off any time soon. When Mount St. Helens went the ground was moving several feet per day, not an inch over six months. Yellowstone routinely moves around, and is a very geologically “hot “ spot, but scientists tracking the movement aren’t worried.
This video from the USGS and this news report from KTVQ are fascinating.
Yellowstone is beautiful, and I keep meaning to take another summer camping trip there. It isn’t preparing to blow up; it is just doing what it always does: moving magma around deep underground and keeping us on our toes.

Darn-a nice cataclysmic event just about now could solve a lot of problems.
