Whereas in Singapore, these girls would have been arrested. Am gonna go ahead and assume (with no apologies) they are repeat offenders and he got sick of telling them to fuck off. Not that that justifies his actions. But one can appreciate the frustration...

I was standing in a Walgreens last year, talking to the cashier, bemoaning the fact that the store was closing...and while chatting, this [bleep] walked right out the front door with items they had not paid for. And the cashier turned to me and said: "...aaand that's why we're closing."

All of these employees should be armed with stun guns and blow-darts. Prosecute all of these assholes. Stop making excuses for them. Stop justifying their shitty behavior. They suck.

"But one can appreciate the frustration..." I can't imagine wanting to kill someone for stealing pennies of soda from a company that underpays and underinsures me.

If I had to watch classless Johnny Somali-wannabes every single day taking advantage and acting disrespectful and probably even filming it all for clicks and likes? Then yes, I can 100% sympathize with any employee who would finally snap and try to do something about it. Again: I *do not agree* with how he went about doing so...he totally overreacted. But like...I get it.

How about if you move to Singapore and experience the whole dictatorship thing? Just think, no more pesky civil right and no more having to post comments on BoingBoing,

Agreed on due process and civil rights: it was encouraging to see CA rescind their ludicrous shoplifting law...now there will be (once again) due process for the crooks and criminals and civil rights for the shop owners. I heard a rumor that Mamdani is contemplating instituting a similar shoplifting law in NYC as the one which CA just got rid of...I sincerely hope that rumor is erroneous!

And hey now, look at that: we also agree on the death penalty not being appropriate for these sorts of misdemeanors and crimes. (Also: I'm not exactly sure who was arguing in favor of the death penalty to begin with?) Personally: I would love to see states and cities and towns throughout the US consider adopting some version or variation of restorative justice...inspired by such systems as are utilized by certain Native tribes (might not said adoption be an appropriate instance of appropriation?) It would be interesting to hear what these shop-owners might consider to be fair and appropriate recompense...especially for the repeat offenders, who make up a significant portion/percentage of these crimes. For the record: no, I would not vote for caning or chopping off hands and not even for severe jail sentences...we should save all of those punishments for the classless crooks in Washington DC!

Please: you will have to walk me through your reasoning for why you think or feel or assume my comment was racist or implied something that might be perceived by you as such? No snark here...I am genuinely curious as to where the coloring of that comment came from. Ironically enough: the cashier at Walgreens who I was sympathizing with was black and if I had to guess from his accent, probably also an immigrant. And he ultimately lost his job because of the selfish and entitled actions of others. Walgreens may have under-payed and under-insured their employees (re: Jason's comment above) but at least they still *had* jobs. Hopefully by now they have all found work elsewhere at places of employment which will pay them better and provide them with better benefits. We want everyone to be able to do better. We want everyone to be given the opportunity to succeed...to be safe...to feel seen and heard and acknowledged. I'll be darned if I can find the racism embedded within those desires 🤷

PS: Perhaps the hashtags were a *smidge* hyperbolic. I shall make a concerted effort to tone down the Snark-O-Meter moving forward. When in doubt...don't press send! We all want to keep The Boings as a place/space to appreciate the (mostly) wonderful things. Here's to all of the bananas...past, present, and future. #JustLookAtThem!

Thieves suck, but rarely deserve the death penalty. Also, everyone in this country gets due process.

No matter who; no matter what.
