Reddit user finds Steam Machine price hidden in retailer’s HTML
We haven’t heard much about Valve’s cube-shaped “living room PC” since its announcement last year, presumably because they’ve been holding off to see whether this RAM situation stabilizes.
One of the biggest concerns has been the price, especially as PC component costs continue to climb. Thanks to Czech tech retailer smarty.cz, we might have a ballpark estimate. Their Steam Machine listing looks standard at first, but as one cunning Reddit user discovered, inspecting the page’s HTML reveals a poorly concealed price field: about $950 for the 512GB model and $1,100 for the 1 TB model.
Take this with a grain of salt — retailers often add extra margin, and nothing is official. Even so, these aren’t exactly console-competitive prices — not yet, anyway — which raises the question of who exactly the Steam Machine is for. PC gamers, hardcore enough to be tempted, already know how to cast games to a TV, and console gamers are being asked to make a significant leap in expense.
Half-Life 3 would be one hell of a killer app, though.
