Police charged the trans couple who said a mob beat them outside a park bathroom

Aurora Rush and Shae Sanders say a crowd surrounded them outside a Louisiana park restroom, shouted threats and slurs, and beat Sanders unconscious. Police charged Rush and Sanders, and asked the town council to pass a law banning their bathroom use.

Sanders needed an ambulance and four stitches after being knocked unconscious, while Rush says she suffered a concussion, black eyes, and vicious bruising. Sanders was charged with disturbing the peace. Rush received two counts and was booked into a men's jail despite the female marker on her driver's license.

Multiple parish jurors told Erin in the Morning that Sheriff Julian Whittington requested the restroom ordinance after the incident. The proposal requires parish employees to confront suspected violators and imposes fines or imprisonment on anyone who refuses to leave. Whittington did not comment for the story.
