Gov. Newsom seems to think he'll appeal to conservatives who'll forgive him for being from California, and that democrats will forgive him for being a traitor.
unproven political caution: if you track/"triangulate" to the center to pick up 10% there, you'll lose 25% of the prevailing faction in the 'homeward' direction. newsom is trying to appeal too broadly and it will cost him loyalty.
