The last penny rolled off the press at 3:47 PM yesterday at the US Mint in Philadelphia, watched by US Treasurer Brandon Beach and a handful of mint workers. After 238 years, the one-cent coin officially died of economic inefficiency — it cost nearly four cents to make each penny.
