Microsoft court docs hint at Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters
Not releasing something Fallout: New Vegas-related to tie in to the second season of the immensely popular TV show taking place in that game’s setting would be dropping the ball on a truly Biblical level. Then again, Bethesda is no stranger to dropping the ball.
Season 2 of Amazon’s Fallout TV show has been great so far, it should be said, but some die-hard fans are more focused on what’s going on outside the show. A promotional page for the show features a mysterious locked section hidden behind a countdown — and while that countdown coincides with the season finale in a few weeks, some believe it might also tease a remaster of Fallout 3 or New Vegas.
It’s not quite as far-fetched as it sounds. Do you remember those court documents from the Microsoft/Activision acquisition that accurately leaked the existence of the Oblivion remaster? They also included a directly-named Fallout 3 remaster and a mysterious Project Platinum, which some have taken as a reference to the Platinum Chip, New Vegas‘ central Macguffin. Bethesda studio boss Todd Howard has also gone on record expressing a desire to continue shadow dropping games after taking that approach with Oblivion.
While anything else is hearsay, a few outlets swear that confidential sources have confirmed the remastered duology is coming at some point. Among others, Windows Central had this to say:
[W]e are eventually getting a Fallout 3 remake in the vein of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as well as Fallout New Vegas on top. I’m told Obsidian of Grounded, The Outer Worlds, and Fallout New Vegas fame has four new projects, some big some small — Fallout co-creator Tim Cain also joined the studio a short while ago. I’m not sure if any of these projects are Fallout-related, but either way, it shows Xbox isn’t taking its foot off the pedal when it comes to content.
Whether that comes next month or next year is anyone’s guess, but personally I wouldn’t put too much stock in that Amazon timer, which in all likelihood is just a behind-the-scenes featurette that contains spoilers.
Given that Oblivion Remastered is nearly twenty times larger than the original, though, I’d start freeing up hard drive space now.
