Kingdom Come: Deliverance devs are making a Lord of the Rings game
Although its predecessor didn’t exactly grip me, sprawling medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance II proved to be one of my favorite games of the 2020s. So big! So immersive! So stuffed with content that it made me concerned for the dev team! With this game, developer Warhorse have proven that they’re absolute masters of crafting a beautiful, immersive setting propped up by deep gameplay systems and then setting you loose to break all of it over your knee.
Naturally, the big question has been what’s coming next. Kingdom Come 3, maybe? Something new? A licensed game using their expertise in service of an already established setting, like Larian with Baldur’s Gate 3?
As revealed by Warhorse today, the answer is apparently “all of the above.”
That’s right: they’re simultaneously developing both a new Kingdom Come game and a Lord of The Rings game in the style of Kingdom Come, which both sound like massive undertakings separately. Together? I can’t even imagine. If Lord of the Rings is ever going to get a good game, though, this sounds like the best shot it has.
No word yet on title, release window, or really anything except “these games are being made.” If Warhorse can truly pull something this ambitious off, and that’s a big if, Bethesda‘s crown might be theirs for the taking…
