Hegseth adds Grok to US “AI arsenal,” enemies reportedly dying of laughter
The Pentagon says it’s adding Grok to its “AI Arsenal,” which is a little like announcing that national defense will now be partially handled by a sarcastic reply guy who learned everything he knows from scrolling X at 3 a.m. If you’re a hostile foreign actor, please take a moment to be intimidated by the phrase “frontier AI system,” powered by Musk’s Grok, an artificial intelligence best known for confidently making things up and then smirking about it.
The Pentagon is now armed to the teeth with “frontier AI systems, based on the Grok family of models,” according to a press release issued Monday. Are you trembling now, ISIS? Does the word “Grok” send a chill down your spines, Tren De Aragua?
…
While the Israeli armed forces appear to have used AI against Gaza in chillingly lethal ways, GenAI.mil sounds much more Dilbert-ish. If you were worried the Pentagon’s Aeron chair jockeys were going to be stuck using Gemini for Government, I have great news: they’ll also have—when the software is implemented in “early 2026″—exciting new AI products from an Elon Musk-owned company, which will enable “the secure handling of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in daily workflows,” along with “access to real‑time global insights from the X platform, providing War Department personnel with a decisive information advantage.”
This is the same Grok that has hallucinated news, echoed viral nonsense, and is utilized by Elon to be the life of the party. Now, Grok is being invited into the Pentagon’s “bespoke” AI platform like an AOL CD-ROM slid under the blast door at NORAD. While actual military AI use elsewhere has involved chilling automation of lethal force, the U.S. version appears aimed at streamlining memos, summarizing chaos, and maybe explaining to senior officials why the chatbot just cited a parody account as a source.
