I’m having hardcore Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer feelings. This new place is strange and confusing!

Same. I find it awkward. More limiting. Less easy to share with friends. The community badges and my old username are gone ='(

It's going to be interesting to see how the new site and old community adapt to each other.

One thing is for sure, so far: it will be a new community, not the old one. That one's gone.

Where is my "sob" emoji?

We are kicking and screaming, in a good way!

As far as I can tell so far, the kommunity is clicking and screening. (Not sure if bOinG or oInK, but quite surely also tutting and screaming.)

Ok, looking at the number of Regulars who are now anonymized, and at the engagement level here, I say we are well and truly kicked.

I do not blame BB for taking the jump. The "SS is supporting Nazis so I won't go there" is difficult to parse for me as someone living in Germany, because basically every service provider slash holster based in the US does that, from my POV. I can understand the sentiment, since I would not have made a jump to, say, xhitter or disgracebook for value-based reasons.

But this walkout speaks volumes.

The chat feature here are not suitable for re-building a community, and the feed-experience is rather disappointing. The notifications are annoying at best, unusable at worst.

But we have this. And I, for one, am trying hard to a) stay on BB and look at the bananas authors, contributors and others throw at us and b) use the comments to interact with the lovely mutants who are still with us over here at the sub.

So, I am aboard for a while. But I am unsure who is also trying to hold on. Hey guys, would you mind showing your hand?

Sure, but you've seen @orenwolf's post in regard to cloudflare et al., I take it?

Well, I read philosophical essays in school, and one sentence wich stays with me ist "Es gibt nichts richtiges im Falschen." To despair, however, is not an option for me. I don't judge anyone or anything at this point It''s hard to parse what's on US'ians mind for me, so I can only reflect on my own reaction.

I'll try this sub thing, and I mourn the times when this was a real community just the same.

I'm still here - but my engagement has plummeted. Substack is just ill-suited for this purpose, and even if I *could* easily navigate it, the discussion threads all seem pretty anemic, with just a handful of comments at most. I'm really bummed out by the whole thing.

blondie's avatar

I came along at first with the best of intentions but am finding it overall disappointing and my engagement is rapidly dwindling.

I complained about the excessive amount of adds before to the point of installing an ad blocker for being able to read boing boing. I am very happy to pay for your content!

I’m here via Substack BB rss feed via feed reader.

premium.boingboing.net/feed

However, when trying to expand the comments it then moved me from my feed reader app and opened the Substack app (which I don’t really want to use). But if I delete the app then I can add and read the full comments in my feed reader app (Feedly).

I’m so sad (disappointed really 😉) about this. Boing boing has been my connection to a sense of community without having to enter the realm of social media. I have happily paid for a subscription to give it a chance. I don’t want to just have a boing flavored social media feed though - on substack of all things). But I guess that’s what I’ve purchased. Sigh. Here’s to the good times.

Hans Speijer's avatar

I am kinda sad they are shutting down the BBS.. What's the problem in keeping it going?

AnnaChronica's avatar

Yes, I would have paid for a subscription regardless - having a place where only subscribers can comment is not something I feel a need for. BB is one of maybe three places online with comments worth reading. I've been reading BB since it was a zine, so I'm more than happy to pay for a sub, but I miss the community. It would be nice if they could bring the BBS back.

It was the very funny line in a BB post about the sentient bag of laundry being described as a sentient bag of laundry that convinced me to shell out for the annual subscription.

I'll miss being an Assistant Rear Vice-Admiral.... :(

So... I've decided to not continue beyond the 7-day trial. Substack's organization is sub-optimal with its "reload to see new comments" and I have to have keep different tabs open for Notes, Chats, and for each of the discussion topics I'm interested in today.

I'll try back after they get the new features that the vendor has promised, but for now, kinda unhappy about it all.

veggiespam's avatar

And it looks like it charged me before the end of 7 days. Fun. How to get a refund?

jctepl's avatar

So coming back to this an approximate month after the switch... I'm uncertain.

FlyingCats's avatar

I paid for the year subscription, but the experience is so anemic, I'm just considering it a contribution for the years I've enjoyed BoingBoing - I don't see this community surviving this awkward format as I see so few comments.

This was a great place to read political comments as well, without the hysteria of the Democratic discussion site I also read (which is a great site but the commentary gets so emotional).

What ever happened to "Ad-free searchable archives dating back to 1989"?
