Everything is a chill game now. Everything.
Quirky EarthBound-inspired turn-based RPGs are so out, and cozy simulator games are so in.
I thought the trend had reached its peak with Vacation Cafe Simulator, which was such a specific pitch that it seemed impossible to zoom in any further. The newly-announced ReStory has it beaten handily. Store management simulators are standard fare, but ReStory is an electronics repair store simulator set in mid-2000s Japan where you fix nostalgic off-brand gadgets and give customers sage advice.
It’s a novel pitch, but it’s also so constrained to a specific time and place that it thoroughly dethrones VCS for perhaps the narrowest scope I’ve ever seen in a game. Every conceivable scenario of human existence is getting a lo-fi soundtrack and a $15 price tag.
For people who actually owned a PSP back in the day, though, nothing beats the nostalgia hit.
(Never mind that the promo image depicts a 3DS, which is about five years too late for the time period.)
