I can imagine the thought going through an officer's head -- "No one would drive a crazy thing like that without making sure it was street legal. Oh, wait, that's just what the driver wants me to think." Along with "Hey, that's really cool, let me stop it so I can take a closer look."

I'd swear this was on some TV show when I was a kid, "That's Incredible" or "Real People" for example.
