Adult great white sharks quietly using SoCal beaches as a highway
For years, scientists have documented Southern California waters — especially around Santa Monica Bay — as a nursery habitat for juvenile great white sharks. But amazing new drone footage from The Malibu Artist suggests something broader is happening! Large, fully grown sharks are also moving through these same nearshore waters, using them less as a hangout and more as a coastal transit route.
The great whites aren’t circling, they are commuting. This may be new behavior, or, with the advent of drone photography, it must just be us learning that apex predators have been swimming right next to us for the last 120-130 years and chomping no one.
Think of it as the mirror image of PCH, but for sharks and whales.
